There is an appealing background to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the border from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling den betting is not allowed. Eight gambling dens are situated in a relatively small location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent area, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest betting centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; however, investment sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 17:00, and though visas are supposedly necessary to cross, there are ways around this, as is real of many border crossings.
The 1st Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary boat gambling den, contains 150 slot machines and sixty gaming tables. The Naga casino is open all hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of 21, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machine games and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slot machines and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and sixty six of the normal tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-around vacation and hotel building that contains a number of luxuries accompanying the gambling hall, which provides 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 one armed bandits and 88 table games.
