There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia casinos that sit just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where casino gaming is banned. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a generally tiny space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect area, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest betting locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few limitations constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; although, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are for all intents and purposes necessary to pass, there are methods around this, as is true of many borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary bateau casino, contains 150 slot machines and sixty tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are 150 slots and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 one armed bandits and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the normal gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive vacation and hotel complex that contains many comforts in addition to the gambling den, which offers ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and 88 table games.
